About Us

Helicon Storytelling creates live and cinematic performances rooted in traditional storytelling, theatre, and the ancient world.

We specialise in re-telling stories inspired by folklore and myth, combining classical material with performance and music to create work that is engaging, adaptable, and accessible to a wide range of audiences.

Who are we?

Helicon Storytelling was founded by Hayley Russell and Andrew Hulse, Classics graduates of University College London with a shared background in theatre and a long-standing interest in storytelling.

The company began while co-producing a show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017.

Our resident composer, David Denyer, trained at the Royal College of Music and has extensive experience working in unconventional theatre. When he’s not building his own instruments or jamming with Helicon Storytelling, he can be found on tour with his band, Modern Woman.

What do we do?

We specialise in storytelling performances and projects inspired by folklore, myth, and classical literature.

Our work includes:

  • Live storytelling theatre for public audiences and festivals
  • Performances for schools and educational settings
  • Cinematic and recorded storytelling projects

All of our work is shaped by the techniques of traditional oral composition.

Our Approach

Our performances are created using principles drawn from oral-poetic traditions, particularly those associated with ancient epic.

This includes:

  • The use of recurring phrases, type-scenes, similes, and epithets
  • A close relationship between storytelling and live music
  • A process of live, unscripted composition

Every performance is therefore slightly different, adapting to the audience and the space, while remaining grounded in a strong narrative structure.

Our work is heavily influenced in by ancient stories such as the Iliad and Odyssey.

Accessibility

We believe that stories are for everyone.

Accessibility is built into our practice, both in how we perform and in how we choose and shape material. Our aim is to make folklore and myth open, engaging, and relevant, including for audiences who may not have previously encountered these traditions.

All of our performances are relaxed by design. We provide easy read guides, and like to have a break-out space within our performance area where possible. We are always curious to explore new ways of making our shows accessible!
