About Us

Who are we?

Helicon Storytelling was founded by Andrew Hulse and Hayley Russell; we are Classics graduates of University College London with a love of stories and a background in theatre. We came up with the concept of Helicon Storytelling whilst co-producing a show at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017.

Our resident composer, David Denyer, trained at the Royal College of Music and has extensive experience working in unconventional theatre.

Our in-house Dramaturg and general source of good advice is Caspar Cech-Lucas. Caspar shares our love of the Ancient World and is also an Associate Producer of Dirty Rascals.

What do we do?

Helicon Storytelling specialise in live and cinematic re-tellings of stories inspired by folklore and myth. All our stories are told in the style of traditional oral composition. This means that we use formulaic components (phrases, type-scenes, similes and personal epithets); that every story is in dialogue with improvised musical motifs; and that live, unscripted composition is the core of our devising and performing process – making every performance different and allowing us to tell a variety of stories that adapt to each audience. To read more about the oral-poetic tradition and how we took out inspiration from the Homeric poems (the Iliad and Odyssey), why not check out this blog.

We believe at our core that stories are for everyone and should be accessible to everyone. As such we are committed to grounding accessibility into our practice and reinvigorating the telling of folklore and myth to engage a variety of audiences who may never have had to change to explore these worlds before.

Helicon Storytelling Ltd. often works directly with children and vulnerable adults and therefore takes the issue of safeguarding those parties very seriously. Please see our Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy and Procedures, or contact our Safeguarding Officer, Andrew Hulse, if you have any safeguarding concerns.
